Skate Canada Code of Ethics
Purpose
The purpose of this Code of Ethics is to outline the standards of behaviour and decision-making expected by Skate Canada. These guiding principles promote a respectful, athlete-centered environment consistent with the values and mission of the organization.
Scope
This Code applies to all individuals associated with Skate Canada and its affiliated organizations, including:
-Skaters
-Officials
-Coaches
-Employees
-Board Members
-Volunteers
-Alumni
-Hall of Fame members
It also extends to parents and guardians who are involved in or observe Skate Canada-related activities.
Code of Conduct
All individuals governed by this Code agree to the following:
Professionalism & Integrity
-Conduct myself with the highest standards of ethics and professionalism.
-Follow and promote Skate Canada’s vision and mission in an athlete-centered approach.
-Treat everyone with respect, dignity, and sportsmanship.
-Prioritize the well-being of athletes above competitive success.
Positive Behaviour & Communication
-Use fair and constructive discipline methods.
-Avoid any harmful behaviours, such as hitting, yelling, name-calling, insults, intimidation, or rejection.
-Communicate respectfully in all Skate Canada interactions.
Conflicts of Interest & Manipulation
Disclose any conflicts of interest and avoid decisions influenced by personal gain.
Never engage in unethical conduct aimed at manipulating competition or test outcomes.
Respect for Professional Relationships
-Honour coach-athlete relationships and never solicit athletes from other coaches.
-Safe, Inclusive, and Non-Discriminatory Environment
-Refrain from exploitative, abusive, or corrupt relationships.
-Always act with kindness, fairness, and integrity.
-Foster an inclusive sport that respects all individuals, regardless of race, ancestry, ethnicity, citizenship, creed, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, family status, or any other protected ground.
-Advocate for and uphold Safe Sport principles at all times.
-Abide by the ISU Code of Ethics at both Skate Canada-hosted and non-hosted events.
Legal and Ethical Obligations
-Comply with all applicable laws at the federal, provincial, municipal, and international levels.
-Report to Skate Canada any new criminal charges, investigations, convictions, or bail conditions.
Zero Tolerance for Abuse or Exploitation
-Never use power or authority to coerce others into sexual activity or unethical behaviour.
-Refrain from all sexual conduct with children or youth, including inappropriate language, jokes, touching, or exposure to sexual content.
-Do not engage in or condone bullying, harassment, abuse, neglect, intimidation, or discrimination of any kind.
-Use technology and social media responsibly and never to exploit, disrespect, or harm others.
-Immediately report any suspicion or evidence of child abuse or exploitation to the proper authorities and to Skate Canada at safesport@skatecanada.ca.
Substance Use & Performance Enhancing Drugs
-Do not use, promote, or possess illegal substances or performance-enhancing drugs.
-Compliance & Accountability
-Adhere to all Skate Canada bylaws, policies, and procedures.
-Stay informed about updates and amendments.
-Do not conceal violations of this Code and report misconduct appropriately.
-Cooperate fully with any investigations conducted by Skate Canada.
Consequences
Violations of this Code may result in disciplinary action, up to and including suspension or expulsion from Skate Canada.
